Is coláiste iontach é Coláiste Laichtín. Bhain mé taitneamh as an gcoicís a chaith mé ansin. Bhí gach duine chomh deas agus bhí na múinteoirí chomh cabhrach. Tá feabhas ar mo chuid Gaeilge agus cinnte beidh me ag filleadh ar ais ann.

Coáiste Laichtín is a wonderful college. I enjoyed the fortnight I spent there. Everybody was so nice and the teachers were so helpful. My Irish has improved and I will certainly be back.

Mark really enjoyed his time at the college this year. His confidence in Irish is growing all the time. He achieved a C on the Higher Level Junior Certificate. We are very pleased with the result. His report at the end of 1st year was an abysmal fail. Mark has lots of ability and love for the language and our wish is that he will always embrace and enjoy it. Many thanks for all your hard work and your wonderful college. He is really looking forward to 2017.

Is mar gheall ar mholadh mo charad gur shocraigh mé dul chuig Coláiste Laichtín trí bhliain ó shin. Chuaigh mé ann don chraic agus ní raibh aon suim agam sa Ghaeilge ag an am. D’fheadfá a rá go raibh mé go huile is go hiomlán i gcoinne na Gaeilge toisc go raibh mé tar éis Gaeilge gnánleibhéal a dhéanamh don Teastas Sóisearach. Is cuimhin liom nar thuig mé focal ar bith ar an gcéad lá, agus níor thuig na múinteoirí focal ar bith a dúirt mé! Cuireadh an t-ainm ‘buachaill gan gaeilge orm’.

Go luath ina dhiadh seo shocraigh mé go ndéanfainn mo dhícheall feabhas a chur ar mo chuid Gaeilge ionas go dtuigfinn na múinteoirí ar a laghad. Ba mhór an cúnamh a thug múinteoirí an choláiste dom, bhuail siad liom roimh na ranganna agus d’fhán siad liom i rith sos na ranganna chun mo cheisteanna a fhreagairt. De réir a chéile tháinig feabhas uirthí, agus bhí mé gafa leí. Ag tús an chúrsa ní raibh mé in ann abairt a chur le chéile agus ag an deireadh, bhí mé i mo chaptaen den fhoireann díospóireachta.

Tar éis filleadh abháile tugadh cead dom bogadh go dtí an ardleibhéal don ardteist. Tar éis na hardteiste bronnadh gradam orm ón scoil as ucht an grád is airde a bhaint amach sa ghaeilge san ardteist. Anois táim i mbun céime sa Nua-Ghaeilge sa Choláiste Ollscoil Báile Átha Cliatha. Is mar gheall ar Choláiste Laichtín go bhfuil mé anseo i gCOBAC. Ó Ghaeilge gnáleibhéal go céim sa Ghaeilge, caithfaidh mé mo bhuíochas a ghabháil leis an gColáiste agus le foireann an Choláiste, d’fhéadfá a rá gur athraigh siad mo shaol.

A friend of mine suggested I should go to Colaiste Laichtín three years ago. I decided to go and have some fun, I had no interest in Irish at that time. You could actually say I was opposed to the language as I was after doing Ordinary Level Irish in the Junior Certificate. On the first day I was totally lost and the teachers couldn’t understand one word I said. I was called ‘the boy with no Irish’.

Shortly afterwards I decided I would do my very best to improve my Irish in order to understand my teachers. The teachers were wonderful, they helped me before classes commenced and assisted me at break time. My Irish gradually improved and I was captivated by the language. At the beginning of the course I couldn’t put one sentence together, by the end of the course I was captain of a debating team.

When I returned home I was allowed to move to the Higher Leaving Certificate class in Irish. On completing the Leaving Certificate the school presented with an award for achieving the highest grade in Leaving Certificate Irish that year. Presently I am doing a degree in modern Irish in University College Dublin. All this is due to the experience I had when I attended Coláiste Laichtín. You could certainly say that Colaiste Laichtín changed my life, I have gone from Ordinary Level Irish to degree level in university, I wish to thank the college and all the staff.

Níor labhair mé mórán Gaeilge go dtí an cúigiú bliain, ach an samhradh sin, chuaigh mé go hInis Oirr agus chaith mé treimhse ar chúrsa le Coláiste Laichtín. Níor thuig mé gur teanga í an Ghaeilge taobh amuigh den seomra ranga go dtí an samhradh sin sa Ghaeltacht mar níl aon ghaeilge ag mo thuismitheoirí nó ag mo chairde. Chuaigh mé go Coláiste Laichtín mar dhalta i 2009, chuaigh mé ar ais mar chinnire i 2014 agus táim ag dul ar ais i mbliana, 2016, mar mhúinteoir!!

I never spoke much Irish up to fifth year. That summer I attended Colaiste Laichtín in Inis Oírr. I never realised that Irish existed outside the classroom until that summer. My parents don’t speak Irish. My friends don’t speak Irish. I attended Coláiste Laichtín as a student in 2009. I returned as an ardchinnire/leader in 2014 and as a teacher in 2015. I will be returning again to teach in Coláiste Laichtín in 2016.

I really enjoyed Coláiste Laichtín because I got to make loads of new friends. I will stay in contact with them. It definitely improved my Irish and made me more confident in speaking the language. We did really have fun activities such as themed ceilís and going to the beach.

Caoimhe 2014.

I met a lot of new fiends. I liked the way we were split into teams, it helped to get to know more people. I loved my Bean an Tí and all the people in the house. The céilís were really fun. I liked the breaks from the céilís (walks). I loved the teachers in class. The days were well structured.

I really enjoyed Coláiste Laichtín because of all the new people I met and going to the beach most days. I also enjoyed walking home everyday and I enjoyed the classes because I feel they were really helpful and I will use what I learned in my Junior Cert. in two years time.

Robyn 2014.

I met loads of new people and made lots of new friends. I especially enjoyed the free time, like at lunch. I loved going to the beach as well. I loved walking home and not having to take buses, cars etc. Overall I enjoyed the experience on the island.

Emma 2014.

I really enjoyed Coláiste Laichtín because the days were well structured. We got great weather so we went to the beach a lot. I made a lot of new friends. The teachers and ardchinnirí were helpful in learning new Irish. I liked my house because I got nice food. The sports and the teams were very good as well. I liked how we sometimes took a break from the céilís and sometimes took walks as well.

Anna 2014.

All the teachers are so nice and join in with the students when playing sports. Going to the beach was also really fun and the extra game we did on the beach like a huge game of bulldog. The classes were always helpful especially the grammar classes. The college diary is very good for the poems.

Eimear 2014.

I liked meeting new people. I really enjoyed going to the beach everyday and going swimming. I liked doing the sports and getting split into different teams because then you talk to different people that you didn’t think you would talk to. I also enjoyed the points system and the idea that if you do really well that you would get a big prize.

Just a note to say many thanks for the wonderful time my son Conor is having in Colàiste Laichtin. We visited yesterday and were delighted to see how happy he was.  Many thanks to you and all your team and a special thanks to his Bean an Tí, who is being so kind to the boys.

Wishing you every success with the rest of the course, and hopefully when it's my daughters time to go to the Gaelteacht she will go out there too, and we will get to visit such a beautiful place again.

Regards Aine.

A chara,
Please pass on our thanks to the principal and staff of Colaiste Laichtin for a great 3 weeks that Sarah had. Her Irish has really improved.

Just a note to say thank you to everyone involved in Colaiste Laichtin, course B. Samantha and Sandra enjoyed every minute and as always you were all so good to them, especially the teachers at school and Bean an Tí who looked after them and fed them so well. It was all much appreciated,

Pat and Mary

Dia duit, just a quick word to say how MUCH I loved my experience at your school, it was in 1980-81. I wasn't very "into" the Irish Language at that time! Reading off boring phrases at school YAWN, but was persuaded by a good friend of mine to go. Really to go to school everyday during summer,NO WAY!! Anyway as I said I was persuaded to go. What a great time. I attend classes everyday was taught how to speak Irish and how to think As Gaelige, the time I had on Inis Oir was brilliant, We stayed with the Ban On Ti whose husband was the light House keeper very close to the wreck "the Plessy" I think the name was?
I have lived in the States for the past 28 years and STILL talk about my time on that Island. I have three kids now and try to give them some basic teaching into the Irish language. If it wasn't for my time there I wouldn't passed my leaving cert in Irish and more important the importance of MY LANGUAGE. Thank you for an experience that I will NEVER NEVER forget!
